Shipping goods is a serious business

The Italian railway network is structured and equipped to allow the circulation of freight trains operated by various transport operators.
The Italian State Railways make available to operators and companies the freight trains that travel on the network every day, the regular lines and more than 200 dedicated facilities, including interchange areas between rail and road transport (intermodal centres), railway yards for loading and unloading goods and connections for direct connections between production plants and the railway network.
In the analysis of the European context, the railway corridors are then part of the Ten Corridors.
The Trans-European Rail Network (TEN) is a rail network project consisting of all the major lines crossing the individual nations that make up the European Union; these were identified and determined with the adoption of Decision 1962/96/EC of 23 July 1996.
Subsequently, Decision 884/2004/EC extended its application to the new accession countries. The aim of the TEN is to ensure a rebalancing of road and rail freight transport, thus reducing the economic gap between the regions of the European continent and promoting their development by rationalizing and making infrastructure compatible and interoperable.
The EU's new infrastructure policy triples EU funding for the transport sector to €26 billion for the period 2014 to 2020, focusing it on a new, clearly defined core network. The new core network will constitute the main transport arteries in the European single market and will eliminate bottlenecks, modernise infrastructure, and streamline cross-border transport operations for passengers and businesses across the EU. To implement it, nine main transport corridors will be established, with the cooperation of Member States and stakeholders, allowing for the concentration of resources and the achievement of results.
The new TEN-T core network will be based on a comprehensive network of connections that will feed into the core network at regional and national levels. The ultimate goal is to ensure that, progressively, by 2050, the vast majority of European citizens and businesses will be no more than a 30-minute journey from the core network.

Single-carriage transport relies on the presence of an intermediate sorting facility within the transport chain. Between origin and destination, the railcar can travel on multiple trains, optimizing its circulation both productively and economically. The most suitable transport options for this type of transport are those involving the transport of the equivalent of a few railcars per week or goods whose seasonality throughout the year cannot otherwise be accommodated.
Single wagon services also appear to be particularly used for the transport of specific types of goods, as emerges from the research "“Single Wagonload Traffic in Europe: challenges, prospects and policy options “The analysis of the results of the interviews and questionnaires specifically prepared for that research allowed us to identify the main traffic segments handled in the selected countries, and more precisely:
- base metals, products of the metallurgical industry;
- chemicals;
- coal and lignite; oil and LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas);
- heavy industry (including transport);
- agricultural products.
This suggests that the evolution of single-carriage transport is likely also linked to the specific market dynamics of these product categories. The correlation between the evolutionary trend of distributed traffic and the evolution of land transport of certain goods appears to be verified for metallurgical industry products.,

Combined transport, which involves transporting materials in a single load unit across multiple vehicles, offers significant advantages. Only the loading and unloading operations are performed by road using trucks.
The main transport, and therefore a large part of the total journey, takes place by rail.
With Ministerial Decree no. 28T of 15 February 2001, the Ministry of Transport implemented Directive 92/106/EEC of 7 December 1992 on the establishment of common rules for certain combined transport of goods between Member States of the European Union (EU) or parties to the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA), exempting such transport from all quotas and authorisations.
Pursuant to Article 1 of the aforementioned Ministerial Decree, "combined transport" means the transport of goods between EU Member States or States party to the EEA Agreement in which the truck, trailer, semi-trailer with or without a towing vehicle, swap body, or container (20 feet or more) complete the initial or final leg of the journey by road and the other leg by rail, inland waterway, or sea.
